I like thinking of the Internet as a series of countries. There is the People’s Republic of Google who weave their own propaganda and publicly wave banners that read ‘Don’t be evil.’ There is the Commonwealth of Facebook presided over by Supreme Chancellor Zuck the First. Then there are a bunch of rebels and misfits running around on Tumblr, thinking they’re freedom of speech fighters. There are countries filled with unspoken etiquette like LinkedIn. There are rogue nations like Twitter, who you can buy off to help your cause no matter what your primary country of affiliation is. There are virtual countries that are perfect for sightseeing like the Isles of Instagram. These countries wage wars, create alliances and grow ever cautious of quickly emerging nations. You can apply for dual and multi-citizenships to hedge your bets on which e-country will emerge victorious.
